NAIA Men’s Basketball Championship Brings $2.7 Million Economic Impact to Downtown KC

March excitement returns to Kansas City as the 88th Annual NAIA Men’s Basketball National Championship tips off at historic Municipal Auditorium on March 19 – 24th. Each spring, the nation’s top 16 NAIA teams converge downtown for a high-energy, single-elimination tournament that crowns a national champion and creates unforgettable moments for athletes, fans, and the community. First held in 1937, this tradition-rich event is the longest-running championship in college basketball history, with Kansas City proudly serving as its original and longtime home—where elite competition and passionate fan bases have defined NAIA basketball for generations.
The Championship delivers a strong economic impact, generating an estimated $2.7 million to Downtown KC (Visit KC Economic Impact Study, 2025), welcoming nearly 40,000 fans, and bringing approximately 2,500 athletes from across the country to the Kansas City metro area.
In addition to the on-court action, the Championship features several community-focused promotional events that bring to life the theme For the Love of Basketball. Youth Sports Day welcomes local youth sports clubs to catch the action as a team. Salute to Heroes Day honors military members, first responders, and frontline workers. Pack the Court Night offers free admission to KC metro-area high schools and youth organizations, while the Teaming Up for Character event invites local elementary and middle school students to engage with student-athletes, participate in basketball skills drills, and learn what it means to be a true champion of character. Additionally, the NAIA will once again partner with the Kansas and Missouri Special Olympics to host an inclusive Basketball Skills Clinic for basketball fans from special organizations.
Fans, community groups, and businesses are encouraged to get involved through exclusive group packages and ticket opportunities. To learn more about group outings or fundraisers, contact Dan Robinson at drobinson@naia.org, or visit naiahoops.com for general fan and ticket information.
Mark your calendars now to be part of one of college basketball’s most storied traditions.
