From Dallas to KC: A park visit that inspires our future

Klyde Warren Park (KWP) is a 5.4-acre park built over a freeway in downtown Dallas. It is owned by the City of Dallas and operated by a non-profit organization focused on bringing the community together. Comparatively, Roy Blunt Luminary Park (Luminary Park), planned for Downtown Kansas City, will be a 5.5-acre park also over an interstate highway, connecting the Central Business District with the Convention Center and Crossroads Arts District and beyond to other adjacent communities. Similar to KWP, Luminary Park will also be managed by a non-profit organization.

Art in the Loop Live Performances Kick-off 816 Day Celebrations

This year’s August 16th is shaping up to be the biggest and best 816 Day yet! If you have never heard of 816 Day, it is the Missouri side of our community’s “Area Code Holiday”. Once again this year, the Downtown Council is working with a great group of community partners to offer 816 Day Bingo. But first, the party gets started at the City Market on Saturday, August 16th at 6:00pm for a magical night of music, movement, and soul as Art in the Loop brings together three extraordinary performers who each explore wonder through rhythm, tradition, and self-expression.

Graffiti in Downtown and River Market? No Problem

Graffiti has been around since the dawn of time. It is an avenue for one to express themselves. But if it isn’t warranted, commissioned or requested… it has to come down. In the Downtown and River Market, graffiti continues to be a concern of our residents, tenants and visitors alike. Luckily, the CID’s have Shelia Tatum to lead up our graffiti removal initiative.

Welcome Downtown Council’s Summer Interns!

This summer, Art in the Loop and the Downtown Council welcome two new interns! Lilly Gerend and Andrezza Scala. Over the next few months, they will have the opportunity to work closely with people across downtown to assist in the development of our city. Their work will focus on the public activation and event series managed by the Downtown Council, Art in the Loop, and the Downtown/River Market CIDs. This includes assisting with social media, website updates, event documentation, special writing projects related to the activations and artists, and event logistics support.

On April 30th, leaders and stakeholders from five of Kansas City’s Community Improvement Districts (CIDs) came together for a unique trolley tour. Attendees included the majors in charge of the Central and East Patrol Divisions and other KCPD staff, city officials such as Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw, representatives from the Waldo CID, Truman Road CID, and those listed below. The group had a desire to learn from one another, share best practices, and build stronger collaborative ties across the city.
