Downtown Garden Club Grows Community From the Ground Up

The creation of the Downtown Garden Club serves as a natural extension of the vibrant success and community-driven model established by the River Market Garden Club. Seeing the positive impact that collaborative beautification efforts – such as tree planting, regular maintenance, and community workdays – have had on the River Market neighborhood, the Downtown Community Improvement District (DCID) and residents across downtown were inspired to foster a similar spirit of stewardship in the Central Business District. By tapping into a growing base of engaged downtown resident volunteers, this new initiative aims to replicate that “green thumb” culture, organizing neighbors who are passionate about transforming urban spaces into more inviting, living environments.
With leadership provided by Jamie Bell, the Downtown Garden Club has already hit the ground running with hands-on projects designed to revitalize local streetscapes. Volunteers have actively been engaged in beautification efforts that go beyond simple cleanup, focusing on refreshing landscapes with fresh mulch, planting new flowers and bushes, and providing consistent care for shared areas.
As someone who has unexpectedly been charmed by our great city, Jamie is a resident of downtown Kansas City who has fully embraced the heartbeat of the community. Over the course of his three-year residency, he has transitioned into a dedicated leader within the city, contributing his time to the Downtown Neighborhood Association Board and overseeing operations at the Downtown Community Garden. Beyond his stewardship of green spaces, Jamie remains deeply committed to local educational initiatives and assisting our neighbors in need. While he is widely recognized as a visionary thought leader and a supportive mentor, his deepest devotion remains with his wife, Michelle, and their two children.
A primary focus has been a new partnership with the employees at SS&C who operate the community garden at 10th and Jefferson. After some much needed TLC to manage the overgrown vegetation and restore the space as a productive garden, the area is once again thriving this growing season with the produce being given Prospect KC which uses the vegetables in the meals provided at their community kitchen. Jamie also helped connect the community garden with a teacher at Crossroads Charter Schools where that teacher is now using the garden as a living laboratory for the students.
Through these dedicated workdays and engaged downtown resident volunteers, the club is effectively building a cleaner, greener downtown, one planting at a time.
