Black Lives Matter murals light up KC thoroughfares

Six Kansas City streets are serving as canvasses for Black Lives Matters murals that were painted by artists and volunteers on Saturday.

Black Lives Matter murals are currently on the streets of six KCMO locations. Each one features original artwork created by local artists.

Each mural features a display of “Black Lives Matter” in big block letters. Local Black artists filled in those letters with the creative designs of Avrion Jackson, 10th & Baltimore; Warren Harvey, 63rd & Troost; Vivian Wilson Bluet, 63rd & Brookside; Harold Smith, Briarcliff & Mulberry; Michael Toombs, 31st & Troost; and Adrianne Clayton, 18th & Vine.

They are part of KC Art on Block, led by the Troost Market Collective and supported by a host of sponsors, including the Downtown Council and the Community Improvement Districts.

The murals are the first phase of a three-part project. Next up will be Vertical Black Lives Matter murals on walls. The last piece is to create a blueprint for others to add murals to their own neighborhood streets.
