Overview
The role of a Safety Ambassador requires a unique combination of skills. Ambassadors must demonstrate strong communication, de-escalation, and conflict resolution skills, a caring and compassionate approach to their work, and a customer service focus. During a shift, Safety Ambassadors will engage with a wide range of situations, including providing support for individuals experiencing homelessness or mental health issues, educating people regarding civility ordinances, interacting with business owners and residents, and assisting tourists who need directions. To succeed in this role, a candidate must possess the resiliency to maintain a calm and professional demeanor through the highs and lows of the day. This may be the most challenging and rewarding job you will ever love.

Work is conducted outdoors year-round in our Downtown and River Market CIDs, during all weather conditions. Our service hours are from 6:00 a.m.- 10:30 p.m., seven days a week. Set schedules are five 8-hour shifts (6:00am to 2:30pm OR 2:00pm to 10:30pm).

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Patrol on foot or bicycle in a designated sector of the CID and provide a variety of support services to members of the public.
  • Acting with respect and dignity, approach and wake people who are sleeping in business doorways or in the public right-of-way.
  • Build relationships with people experiencing homelessness to check on their wellbeing and assist in connecting them with services.
  • Serve as an ambassador for Downtown Kansas City by creating a positive experience for all.
  • Use courtesy, tact, and good judgment in working with members of the public.
  • Provide directions, maps, handouts, and information to tourists, visitors, residents, and local businesses.
  • When it is safe to do so, approach people engaging in specific civility ordinance violations, assess and inform them of the violation, and encourage voluntary observance of the ordinances when appropriate.
  • Build relationships with local businesses to share information and assist with problem-solving.
  • Utilize computers and hand-held mobile devices to collect data and track daily work activities.
  • Work on special assignments both as individuals and as part of a team.
  • Represent the Downtown and River Market CIDs at special events in a positive and professional manner.

Qualifications
Must be able to work outdoors in all weather, spending the majority of time on foot or riding a two-wheeled bicycle. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and be able to hear and write in English.

  • Must be able to pass the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) – covers history in all 50 states
  • Bike riding skills: Ride a bicycle for full work shifts outdoors, in all weather. *Must pass a bicycle riding assessment with an emphasis on low riding speeds.
  • Knowledge of (and willingness to learn) how to interact with people affected by mental health and substance abuse issues.
  • Time management skills and self-discipline to work independently and remain on task without constant supervision.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills. English required; additional language proficiencies a plus.
  • Collaborative mindset to work as part of a team, toward the achievement of shared goals.
  • Customer service focus; previous experience preferred but not required.
  • Ability to problem-solve, exercise judgment, and make sound decisions.
  • Level-headed demeanor and a demonstrated ability to remain calm under pressure in an often fast-paced and changing environment.

Compensation
Position is $16/hour. Eligible for medical, dental and vision benefits, paid time off, paid sick time off, $15,000 Life Insurance paid short-term and long-term disability insurance with full-time status. All benefit eligibility dates are based on a 90-day probationary period.

Clean Team

Overview
The Maintenance Ambassador is responsible for, but not limited to, keeping the sidewalks, curbs, and other areas of the physical environment of the Downtown and River Market Community Improvement Districts (CIDs) clean and free of litter, trash, and other forms of debris. Ambassadors will be assigned a specific work area within the CID.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of an assigned work area of approximately six to eight blocks in size.
  • Sweeps or removes litter from sidewalks, curbs, and other areas of public space.
  • Removes debris from the curb line to prevent obstruction to the storm drains.
  • Locates and removes graffiti from buildings, sidewalks, and sidewalk/street fixtures.
  • Performs leaf blowing during required seasons.
  • Provide customer service to visitors, business people, merchants, and residents of CIDs.
  • Communicates with coworkers and supervisors via radio dispatch to report location, cleanups, and facilitate problems.
  • Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to weeding, limited landscaping, training, and working with Community Service Workers.
  • May need to operate and /or maintain mechanized equipment like green machines, blowers, and power washers.

Qualifications
Must be able to work outdoors in all weather, spending the majority of time on foot or riding a two-wheeled bicycle. Must be able to lift 40 pounds and be able to hear and write in English.

  • Self-motivated, energetic learner and leader with a good sense of humor.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with groups and the public.
  • Ability to follow instructions.
  • Required to maintain a clean, neat appearance.
  • Knowledge of Kansas City and its community is a plus.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be comfortable working in an outdoors setting in all seasons and amongst all types of waste.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
Work Environment – Work outdoors all day, urban environment.

Physical Demands – Sweeping, removing litter and other debris, removing graffiti, leaf blowing, power washing, pushing around a garbage can, lifting full garbage bags, and other litter. Must be able to lift 50 pounds.

Compensation
Position is $13/hour. Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits, paid time off, paid sick time off, $15,000 Life Insurance, and paid short-term and long-term disability insurance with full-time status. All benefit eligibility dates are based on a 90-day probationary period.

Concierge Team

Overview
The overall mission of the CID’s Concierge Program is to assist in creating a secure, well-managed, and welcoming environment for all parties who frequent the Districts, including but not limited to: tourists, business people, residents, and organizations that serve the Downtown and River Market Communities. The Concierge Ambassador will provide a uniform, visible presence to observe, report, and serve as a source of information to the public, law enforcement, local businesses, tenants, and other agencies and organizations.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Must wear company issued uniform when on duty 
  • Responsible for clean and neat appearance of uniform, including shirt, pants, jacket, hat, scarf, belt, and shoes/boots 
  • Serve as goodwill ambassadors, information sources, and as positive, welcoming advocates for the Districts 
  • Communicate Kansas City resources, sites of interest, and current entertainment to assist employees, residents, and visitors to Downtown
  • Interact with District business representatives and tenants for communication and support 
  • Walk on foot or mobilize the Kiosk to support VisitKC and any other partnering events and activities and check with ratepayers daily on any updates 
  • Assist visitors, residents, and conventioneers with information on restaurants, pubs, area transportation, etc. 
  • Represent the CIDs and the Concierge Program in a professional manner at meetings, recurring events, and special events 
  • Complete daily activity reports and other assignments as specified by the Supervisor or Director of Operations 
  • Work on special projects, both individually and with others.

Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills 
  • Must follow instructions 
  • Able to self-motivate and have self-accountability with minimal supervision 
  • Must be willing and able to walk and bicycle in an outdoor urban setting in an extreme climate for up to a 10-hour shift 
  • Able to work day and evening shifts, weekends, and holidays 
  • Successfully pass a pre-employment test: drug screen 
  • Physical requirements include bending, walking, lifting, and carrying up to 25lbs on a regular basis 
  • Work outdoors in less than ideal weather conditions.
  • Practice safe work methods at all times

Work Environment
Work outdoors all day, urban environment.

Hours and Schedule
The Concierge Ambassador shift assignment will be provided during orientation. The normal operating hours for the Concierge department are 10 am-6:30 pm Wednesday through Friday and 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Saturday and Sunday, with two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch period.

Compensation
Position is $15/hour. Eligible for medical, dental, and vision benefits, paid time off, paid sick time off, $15,000 Life Insurance, and paid short-term and long-term disability insurance with full-time status. All benefit eligibility dates are based on a 90-day probationary period.
