Buy KC initiative creates avenue to support KC businesses

When Tom Paolini moved to Kansas City from Denver 23 years ago, people joked he’d moved in the wrong direction, reports The Kansas City Business Journal.

“Twenty-three years ago, we didn’t have the same confidence in ourselves as a city. … There was a little bit of that, ‘We’re a flyover city.’ At that time, we had a decent amount of brain drain. We’ve come a long way in 23 years,” said Paolini, who founded men’s luxury custom clothier Paolini Garment Co.

One aspect still was missing: a comprehensive directory of local, independent businesses in the Kansas City metro. Existing “buy local” programs have been siloed, focusing on categories such as makers or restaurants, he said.

Inspired by the Always Buy Colorado program and the desire to help businesses amid the pandemic, Paolini partnered with Jared Campbell of the Downtown Council of Kansas City, Trozzolo Communications Group and KCSourceLink, which developed a shop local site in 2013 that featured only brick-and-mortar businesses.

The group collaborated for nearly a year on the new BuyKC online directory, which features local, independently owned brick-and-mortar and online-based businesses. The revamped directory also includes broader search functionality, including the ability to search by business owner demographics, such as LGTBQ or woman-owned, and to choose whether you’re shopping for an individual or for business/commercial needs.
