Kansas City Food Trucks Find a Home for First Fridays

The Truck Stop in the Crossroads opens this week

Starting this Friday, patrons of First Fridays in the Crossroads will now be able to enjoy the latest in urban dining at “The Truck Stop,” a collection of Kansas City’s finest food trucks located at 21st and Wyandotte.

The vacant lot, owned by Copaken-Brooks, will serve as a home base for Kansas City’s food trucks on First Friday weekends. This month, “The Truck Stop” will be open on Friday, July 1 from 6-11 pm.  In future months, days and hours may expand to the Thursday and Saturday around First Friday. Additional amenities including picnic tables, lighting and music also will be added.

“The Crossroads is one of our community’s most creative and entrepreneurial areas,” said Jon Copaken, principal at Copaken-Brooks and chair of the Downtown Marketing Group.  “We have this lot and thought it would be an ideal spot for a unique dining destination during First Friday weekends. Our objective with this project is to help contribute to the vibrancy that is Downtown Kansas City.”

The following food trucks will be in attendance with potentially more to be added: Las Tules, Curbside Cuisine, Coffeecake, The Good You and Jerusalem Café. The Truck Stop will provide a designated meeting point and regular hours of operation for KC food trucks and, for a few nights a month, will help concentrate each vendor’s scattered customer bases in the Crossroads.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome The Truck Stop to the Crossroads,” said Suzie Aron, president of the Crossroads Community Association. “First Fridays has become one of Kansas City’s most popular monthly events with tens of thousands of families, foodies and art lovers visiting local galleries, shops and restaurants. The addition of the Truck Stop will make a great experience event better.”

A team of local Kansas City companies consisting of Copaken-Brooks, Polsinelli Shughart PC, Helix Architecture, Foodie LLC, and Global Prairie are contributing time and resources to the Truck Stop project.
